The Crackleback fly was developed by Ed Story of Feathercraft in St. Louis sometime in the 1950’s. It is a truly great attractor fly whether fished wet or dry. This versatile fly can be fished dry utilizing a dead drift, twitched, skimmed or in the surface film as an emerger. It can also be fished wet and even tied as a dropper behind a retrieved streamer. While designed for trout, this is also a great fly for bluegill.
The “Miller’s Variant” is named after a client who designed the pattern. Tied on a Daiichi 1190, (or TMC 100) barbless, or a Daiichi 1180, barbed, chemically sharpened dry fly hook.
