The Egg Sucking Leech, a.k.a. the "Laywer Fly," is basically a
Woolly Bugger with a chenille egg at the head of the fly. I’ve modified the pattern by substituting soft hen hackle in place of the regular hackle. The result is a very “buggy” fly with lots of action even when dead drifted. This pattern is highly effective for both salmon and steelhead. It’s the
only fly I use for King Salmon on Michigan’s Pere Marquette River. The pink/purple color combination is especially effective on Alaskan salmon. Please note the pink/purple color combination is tied with a rooster hackle. Tied on a Tiemco 700 heavy wire chemically sharpened salmon hook.
